What are you up to this summer? #English lesson

Today is June 21, the first day of summer 2015! The summer solstice arrives at exactly 12:38 p.m. EDT, when the sun reaches the highest point in the northern hemisphere. I’M not really INTO astronomy–the study of the planets and stars–but I love knowing what happens in THE HEAVENS when the seasons change. Because it’s the summer solstice, we also get the longest amount of daylight (in the northern hemisphere). After today, the days will begin to get shorter and the nights longer. The temperatures and the humidity, however, will continue to rise until around the end of August, when the cool weather returns.

  • EDT – Eastern Daylight Time
  • BE INTO something – like something very much
  • THE HEAVENS – outer space

Despite the hot and MUGGY weather though, I love summer. I’m going to try to MAKE IT to the beach at least once this season. Summers in New York City are HORRENDOUSLY hot & STICKY, and taking the subway can be DOWNRIGHT BRUTAL as train stations and platforms are not air conditioned and not so deep underground. Nevertheless, most of us here enjoy this time of year and spend as much time outdoors as possible.

  • MUGGY – humid
  • MAKE IT somewhere – go somewhere
  • HORRENDOUSLY – horribly; dreadfully
  • STICKY – humid
  • DOWNRIGHT – completely; absolutely
  • BRUTAL – tough; mean

What about you? Are you PSYCHED that summer is here? What ARE you UP TO this summer?

  • PSYCHED – excited
  • BE UP TO – doing; plan on doing
